There simply is no way to start this journal without clearly and vividly saying this: This show was amazing to see! I had received the tickets for my sixteenth birthday in January and the show was June 18. It was a night of tears and memories for my grandmother and I.
The cast included one of my favorite musical theater actors (Marrick Smith) playing Connor Murphy. Marrick Smith was part of the original Broadway cast for Fun Home and it was amazing to see him take on such a different character.
For those who don't know the show, "Dear Evan Hansen" is a show about an anxious teenager who gets caught in a large misunderstanding that snowballs into a lie. This includes and brings in the suicide of Connor Murphy. Unfortunately, the Murphy's make assumptions about Evan and Connor being close friends. From this, he gains everything he'd ever wanted and begins to really believe his own lies. Eventually, the truth comes out and everyone is forced to deal with the consequences.
This show in particular has stuck with me in several ways. During my freshman year, we were assigned a project that combined all of the arts into one large show. As vocalists, we sang "You Will Be Found" from this show, demonstrating the importance of no one being left behind or forgotten (Ohana). Seeing this show live truly gave me an experience I will never forget and told a story that will never fade away.
