What are the challenges of online education?
Some of the challenges of online education is having to have focus and self-sufficiency. The organization of materials is key and falling behind is far too easy. While every teacher is just an email away, it can be difficult to find the motivation to send those emails and keep up with things. New technologies while playing trial and error stretch. Especially without being able to use Zoom for actual class lessons, sleep schedules are few and far between. A home environment is not a school environment. And while our phones and friends were a distraction before, they're our greatest motivator now.
What is happening in your community right now related to coronavirus?
Some of the things happening in my community focus on seniors and essential worker awareness. As an arts student, it's hard to see all of the locations close that inspire so much positivity and creation. The library's opening being postponed, the park is empty, the dance studios abandoned. It's very odd to see the world stop.
What will you miss most about school?
I have certainly missed the socialization. The familiar schedule, walking paths, teachers, and friends. Even just the small wave of panic at a forgotten assignment or pop quiz. But beyond all of it, the community created by JSA and Jackson High School as a whole.
What makes you feel worried? What makes you feel hopeful? What are you thankful for right now?
I worry a lot about future experiences for everyone-- be it graduations, life steps, promotions, family growth, or retirements. It's also taken a toll on my mental health. I feel hopeful for the future and the healing process of the world. I am grateful for the opportunities to volunteer with so many amazing organizations and the time to spend with my family.
How would life be different right now if coronavirus was affecting kids and younger adults the way it is impacting older folks?
Life would be a lot different because a lot fewer events would be occurring to put others in danger. I believe this simply because of the fact that it is mostly kids and younger adults that are putting themselves at risk. Be it through working or through social interactions.
Besides school, what cancellation or closure has been the hardest for you so far?
Prior to schools being closed, the severity of the situation hadn't set in for most of JHS students. But at the time, the New York Trip cancellation seemed like the worst possible outcome.
